MAN SURVIVES BEAR MAULING

A Vancouver Island man who survived an attack by a grizzly bear said he was working in the bush when a sixth sense told him he wasn't alone.
"I have a really keen sense. I had a feeling somebody or something was watching me," said Brent Case, 53, whose encounter with a grizzly occurred last week while he was taking photos near Bella Coola, about 300 kilometres north of Vancouver.
Prowling nearby was one of Canada's biggest predators, waiting for the right moment to pounce.
"I said, 'this is not happening, this is not happening,'" Case said when he saw the bear coming.
Being mauled by a grizzly bear and living to tell the tale does not happen very often either.
"I put my head down because he was coming at me. I had my axe, but I couldn't hit him 'cause he was too close and he has an agenda," he said. "I threw my axe down and I said, 'the best thing I can do is play dead.'"
And that's probably what saved his life, although that didn't stop the grizzly from biting him numerous times and gnawing the scalp on the back of his head.
"I thought, 'he's eating my brains.' I knew it was happening," Case recalled.
"I just thought, 'God, I hope he gets it over with.' I was down there shaking so bad. I was bleeding -- and the sound and everything, and I just thought, 'I'm too young to die.'"
Luckily for bear savvy Case, playing dead caused the beast to lose interest and the giant predator eventually lumbered away. So did Case.
Despite deep gashes, bites and being blinded by blood, Case managed to run away with a crouch, make his way to his truck and drive 25 kilmetres to the nearest gas station.
B.C. Ambulance came to the rescue at the station, which Case said was one bumpy ride.
"If Gordon Campbell is gonna fix roads, one he should fix is the Bella Coola Road," he said. "I thought I was gonna die a few times."
It will be a slow recovery for Case as he heals, but the seasoned outdoorsman isn't afraid of going back to the bush. He can hardly wait.
He says if ever meets another hungry grizzly, he's prepared to play dead again.
Case is from Saanich, Vancouver Island and thanks his love for his family and his will to live for surviving the attack.

$175 BURGER: YOU WANT GOLD WITH THAT?

NEW YORK:-Its creators admit it is the ultimate in decadence: a $175 hamburger. The Wall Street Burger Shoppe just raised its price from $150 to assure its designation as the costliest burger in the city as determined by Pocket Change, an online newsletter about the most expensive things in New York."Wall Street has good days and bad days. We wanted to have the everyday burger (for $4) ... and then something special if you really have a good day on Wall Street," said co-owner Heather Tierney.
The burger, created by chef and co-owner Kevin O'Connell, seeks to justify its price with a Kobe beef patty, lots of black truffles, seared foie gras, aged Gruyere cheese, wild mushrooms and flecks of gold leaf on a brioche bun.
The eatery sells 20 or 25 per month in the fine dining room upstairs versus hundreds of $4 burgers each day at the diner counter downstairs, Tierney said.
Pocket Change previously designated the double truffle burger at Daniel Boulud's DB Bistro Moderne as the most expensive at $120, and the Burger Shoppe set out to top that.
Boulud's creation -- available only during black truffle season from December to March -- rose to $150 this past season, so the Burger Shoppe raised its price on Monday to $175.
"Our burger is not about the price," said Georgette Farkas, a Boulud spokeswoman. "If you are making something concerned only about the price, you are off in the wrong direction."
Without truffles, Boulud's burger costs $32. It has a ground sirloin patty stuffed with red wine braised short ribs.
O'Connell said the Burger Shoppe was "finding the ultimate expression of each one of the ingredients."
"The concept was like a mushroom-bacon-Swiss cheese burger, which is my favorite sort of burger," he said.
The burger comes with golden truffle mayonnaise, Belgian-style fries and a mixed greens and tomato salad. O'Connell pairs the dish with many fine wines, a lager or a toasted brown beer, or ginger ale.

MAN ACCUSED OF REPEATEDLY CALLING 911 FOR CAB

TEXAS -A man accused of calling 911 15 times in a row because he was tired of waiting for a cab was arrested early Tuesday, police said. Each time Kevin Lewis Waits called, the emergency dispatcher told the man he had to call a taxi service and that police could not help him, said Waco police officer Steve Anderson.
Police eventually went to the apartment complex and found a cab waiting for Waits, who was also there but did not have the $26 taxi fee, Anderson said. Waits, 25, was trying to get to a house in town, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported in its Tuesday online edition.
Waits, of nearby Hillsboro, was arrested after being taken to the hospital because he told an officer that he had used methamphetamine, Anderson said. Waits remained in custody Tuesday afternoon awaiting bond on charges of harassment and theft of service, according to the McLennan County Jail.

NAKED PILOT, FLIGHT ATTENDANT ARRESTED IN WOODS

An airline pilot was found hiding behind a shed wearing only flip-flops and a wristwatch as a nighttime romp in the woods with a flight attendant ended with both under arrest, police said.
Jeffrey Paul Bradford, 24, and Adrianna Grace Connor, 24, both employees of Pinnacle Airlines Inc., were at a diner on the outskirts of Harrisburg on Sunday night before they apparently decided to walk into the woods, police said.
"They told the officer they wanted to go do it in the woods, essentially," said Lower Swatara Township police Sgt. Richard Brandt. "That's the best answer they had."
The two somehow became separated, and people who live in the neighborhood summoned police around 9:30 p.m., saying they had seen a naked man and an intoxicated woman.
A helicopter with heat-seeking equipment was called in, and Bradford was discovered hiding behind a shed shortly before midnight.
Bradford, of Pittsburgh, was charged with indecent exposure, public drunkenness and other offenses. Connor, of Belleville, Mich., was charged with theft from a motor vehicle, public drunkenness and other offenses; police said she took a flashlight from a neighbor's vehicle.A spokesman for the Memphis, Tenn., airline said the two were suspended while the company investigates.
The office of District Justice Michael John Smith, where Bradford and Connor were arraigned, said they were not represented by lawyers. Telephone listings for them could not be located by The Associated Press.
